Most of the coursework for this class will be in support of your major projects for ENGL 1181. Therefore, except for the quizzes, all assignments will be graded on a check system, with the focus on completing all required parts of the assignment. I want you to focus on doing the work, not on worrying about your grade. So, if you complete the requirements and turn in all the required parts of the assignment, you will get full credit. Missing requirements will lead to partial credit, or if several requirements are missed, no credit.
The final project will be graded on a 5-point scale.
I do not accept resubmissions of work that has already been graded in any circumstances.
I do not review work before it is submitted for a grade since feedback on the writing progress is part of the course design.
Extra credit opportunities can be found in the Information Central module on Canvas. Extra credit will not be calculated until the end of the semester (EC doesn’t work with “weighted” grades in Canvas).
All extra credit is due by the Final Project due date.
Check Plus (✓ +) Full credit
All requirements are met.
Check minus (✓ -) Partial Credit
Missing one criteria or one of the requirements is only partially met.
No Credit (No Credit)
The assignment does not meet the requirements.
Important Note: if your assignment is not meeting the criteria so substantially that it cannot be considered a completed assignment, your grade may be dropped accordingly.
Check Plus (✓ +) Full credit
Meets length (if applicable), style, formatting, and other requirements. All required items are turned in. Complete, well organized, generally well executed and thoughtful.
Check (✓ ) Partial Credit
Missing one item from the requirements or one of the requirements is only partially met.
Check minus (✓ -) Partial Credit
Missing two items from the requirements.
No Credit (No Credit)
Missing three or more items from the requirements, did not complete the assignment (missing quite a bit of the assignment, etc), or is not fulfilling the purpose of the assignment.
Grading information for the Final Project can be found on the Final Project assignment page.
Quizzes: Quizzes are due at midnight on Friday but will have a grace period until Sunday evening. They will not be accepted after that point. The lowest quiz score will be dropped automatically.
Exploring Assignments: Can be turned in late for the following class period.
Class Lead Assignment: Due to the nature of the Class Lead assignment, if you miss that day or are unable to complete your Class Lead, you must meet with me to make other arrangements.
Final Project: The Final Project cannot be turned in late.
All work, including extra credit, must be submitted by the last day of class.
In this class, your writing should be your own. That means doing your own thinking and using your own words.
More than anything, I want to hear your thoughts and read your writing—even if those thoughts are still forming or your writing feels messy. That’s part of the process! We’ll be focusing on drafting, revising, and developing ideas over time. Grading in this class reflects that process, not perfection or polished grammar. My goal is to help you find and strengthen your writing voice. But I can’t give you useful and meaningful feedback on your writing if the writing isn't yours.
So, don’t copy someone else’s work, have someone else write your paper, or use AI tools to create full or partial drafts.
If you’re ever unsure about what’s okay, just ask. I’m here to support you—not to catch you doing something wrong. Still, academic dishonesty is serious and can result in a failing grade on the assignment or in the course.
Bottom line: do your own work, trust the process, and ask for help when you need it.
See the Generative AI page on the ENGL 1181 class website for more information on Generative AI use in both ENGL 1170 and ENGL 1181, including policies and tips for using AI as a part of the writing process.
This class will use Canvas to turn in work.

See the Tech Help section of the ENGL 1181 site for tutorials and common software information. Additionally, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or need help.
If you need help with your Macomb login, email, or other college technology, please contact the Service Desk. Your password for Macomb (including Canvas, email, and MyMacomb) can also be reset on the password reset site.
If you need help with Canvas specifically, support can be reached at 877-362-2662.
This class will be a safe place for people to share their ideas and writing with others. I expect everyone to be respectful to their classmates and to me. This will include being respectful towards students who may share different viewpoints than their own. However, discriminatory language and behavior will not be welcome or tolerated.
Additionally, I expect everyone to use common sense when using technology in the classroom. Please wait until natural breaks between activities to use your cell phones for non-class-related purposes.
If you engage in disrespectful or disruptive behavior, you may be asked to leave the class and not return until you have scheduled a meeting with me.
